Here at Children’s Home Society of Missouri, every month (every day!) is devoted to people with disabilities and their families. In March, we all take extra steps to raise awareness about the needs and rights of the people we serve, as well as to celebrate their contributions to our community and society as a whole!

What You Can Do

Spread the word to your friends and family!

Developmental disability is a natural part of the human experience and affects about 45 million Americans and their families.

All people with developmental disabilities can be productive, contributing members of their communities!

Many people with developmental disabilities rely on publicly funded services and supports in order to fully participate in community life.

During times of economic decline, essential services and supports for people with developmental disabilities are often threatened.

The power of people with disabilities is strongest when their voices are united with each other and their friends, families and other allies.

Policy makers can only make good public policy when they hear from the people directly affected by their decisions! Contact your legislator today!

Celebrate and take action for people with developmental disabilities

Make a collage of ways that people with disabilities give back to their communities. Then, if you like, take a picture of your project and e-mail it to us to be featured on the Web site!

Update your Facebook status with inspiring quotes by and about people with disabilities.

Organize a community clothing drive for Children’s Home Society to support the children and families served in our very own community.

Talk about how people with disabilities can be positive role models for others.

Coordinate a fundraising event on behalf of Children’s Home Society and invite CHS to share our stories with your guests.

This new evidenced-based program provides new programs that strengthen families. This programming is being implemented with funding provided by the St. Louis County Children’s Fund, Keeping Kids First.

Programs provide family supports for families with a newly diagnosed child with a developmental disability. This family support coordinator will provide in-home services to access the needs of the family, provide advocacy as they seek services. New programs also include services to young at-risk women who choose to parent during an unexpected pregnancy. Services are available to young women under the age of 21 and those that are parenting other children who live in St. Louis County.

Through the Education and Counseling Services program, additional services are now available for counseling and psychological assessment.

According to Karen Nolte, Executive Director, “this evidence-based program allows CHS to reach many new children and families who may need our services that strengthen the family and thus reducing and/or preventing abuse or neglect”.

For more information on how you can access services, contact CHS at 314-968-2350.
